Chronic tropospheric ozone exposure reduces seed yield and quality in spring and winter oilseed rape

چکیده
Oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) is cultivated worldwide, producing 11.5% of global oilseeds at an economic value 38 billion USD in 2020. It sensitive to phytotoxic damage from exposure tropospheric ozone (O3), a major air pollutant, which disrupts plant physiological processes and thus decreases biomass accumulation. As background concentrations continue increase globally, we investigated the impact on seed oil yield shorter-lived spring (cv. Click) longer-lived winter Phoenix) oilseed cultivar levels (treatments with peaks 30, 55, 80, 110 ppbv) representative typical European conditions where these cultivars are common. Thousand Seed Weight (TSW), important measure final yield, decreased more Phoenix (40%) than Click (20%) increasing exposure. produced racemes many small seeds while fewer larger seeds. However, quality declined substantially Phoenix. The content Click's significantly increased exposure, less desirable components (moisture, chlorophyll, ash) increased. Scaled field-level, our findings imply substantial penalties for growers, potential losses 175–325 ha−1 500–665 under summer periods Europe. Decreased total would likely outweigh benefits any improvement animal cake (increased protein key micronutrients livestock feed). Neither sustained visible injury earlier growth stages, photosynthesis even high thereby making invisible threat. Our reduced quantity threaten production, but differences between may also offer opportunity breeders agronomists identify exploit variation tolerance rape.

Evaluation of growth and seed yield of new winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) genotypes under terminal drought stress conditions
Breeding and production of drought tolerant cultivars for arid and semi-arid area is very important. The present experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of drought stress on seed yield and yield components of oilseed rape as well as identification of high yielding and drought stress tolerant genotypes. Eighteen new winter oilseed rape lines and commercial cultivars were evaluated und...
متن کاملEffect of Sowing Method and N Application on Seed Yield and N Use Efficiency of Winter Oilseed Rape
In northern Europe, replacing winter barley with winter wheat as the preceding crop for winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.; WOSR) often results in a delayed WOSR sowing and poor autumn growth. Based on data from a field experiment running in 2009/2010, 2010/2011, and 2012/2013, this study aims (i) to investigate how a delayed sowing method affects seed yield, N offtake with the seeds, and a...

متن کاملLeaf Senescence, Root Morphology, and Seed Yield of Winter Oilseed Rape (Brassica napus L.) at Varying Plant Densities
In this study, the yield and yield components were studied using a conventional variety Zhongshuang 11 (ZS 11) and a hybrid variety Zhongyouza 12 (ZYZ 12) at varying plant densities. The increase in plant density led to an initial increase in seed yield and pod numbers per unit area, followed by a decrease. The optimal plant density was 58.5 × 104 plants ha-1 in both ZS 11 and ZYZ 12. The furth...
